Our band formed on the 10th September 2000 and a small bit of history is as follows:
Three years before the band formed a bunch of Mossley residents got together to show their support for the orangemen at drumcree. A few of the men had been in flute bands before so they decided to parade around the Old Mossley estate. They had one side drummer, one bass drummer and four fluters, they might not have been large in numbers but they played their hearts out. While parading they always gatherd a good crowd to follow them. One 11th night they paraded to their local bonfire where they were greeted by a couple of hundred people. The crowd throughly enjoyed themselves and wanted them to play well into the early hours of the 12th morning, which they did even though they were all shattered from the previous nights parading.
In the days following the 12th a few of them got together and decided to try and start a band, they had talked about it in previous years but for one reason or another they never got around to starting it. Old Mossley did not have a band for years. Since the days of the Sons of Ulster Mossley then with the William Gordon Memorial. Both bands now being defunct. They knew there where enough young people in the Old Mossley estate to start a band, but as with most new bands, alot of them had never picked up a flute or played a drum before, we knew it would take time to convince them that they could learn an instrument. The next stage was to get a place to practice, we eventually got the Mossley Pavillion, where the first practice took place on the 10th September 2000, and the band was offically formed and the commitee was elected. At our first practice we got an excellent response from the young people from Old Mossley and the surrounding areas, which seen us attract around twenty five people.
We then started to fund raise, selling poker cards etc to get some funds together to purchace some flutes. The band where kindly allowed to use the side drums from the William Gordon Memorial F.B by the family of William Gordon to practice on, which we greatly appreciate.
We needed to raise alot of money to purchase more flutes and also purchase new drums. We where undecided as regards to uniforms due to the vast amounts of money required to purchase even the most modest uniforms. Like most other bands we would probably start of with Black Trousers and Tee shirts. But we decided on a blue Tee Shirt and Tartan Trousers.
We went onto buy Pearl Side Drums and Clifferd Red Flutes. In 2002 we reached something none of the band expected, 12 drums and 35 fluters on parade in the Belfast 12th, something we can be proud of.
We have paraded everywhere across UIster and also in Scotland. Our most active seasons we attended staggering amounts of parades to support every band we could, some weekends we attended up to 5 parades (4 in one day). Again something we can be proud of.
We recentley purchased Andantes, replacing our old Pearls and also with a new Uniform, new members and Glasgow again in our sights for 2008 we have a great future to look forward to. Numbers arent as great as recent years but we are small in numbers and big in heart, and it will not deter what the men and women of the Crown Defenders Mossley want to acheive.
So there it is, that is a little bit of our bands history. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

It is with great sadness that today (30 September 2008) we accounce that the band has folded. Membership declined in recent years and we as a band feel, rather than fade away we will go with our heads held high. To our members, we thank you for your years of dedication! From the great times to the bad, we walked as a family and will always be one. Good luck to them on what they decide to do, remember you learnt your trade with the Mossley band.
We would like to thank each and every Lodge who escorted us on parade from the Black to the ABOD and Orange. We would like to wish all Loyalist bands throughout the United Kingdom all the best for the future. Please remember us with fondness in your heart, angels on our shoulders.
Thank you for your support - Crown Defenders Mossley committee
